Discover, through the poignant accounts of G. Cartuyvels and P. Bourg, a town gripped by war. In Ath, from 24/05/14 to 24/12/14!

Today, only an image remains. The image of a town that could so easily be ours and that is split between the German occupation, with its deprivation and danger and waiting for news from the front.

Georges Cartuyvels: A soldier on the frontline...

April 1915, Georges Cartuyvels, a 20 year old man from Ath volunteers to join the Belgian forces. In October, he arrives at the front at Yser. During the long months, he writes his everyday life in the trenches down in a notebook.

An excellent drawer, he also includes sketches and a dozen or so watercolours.

Pierre Bourg: a spectator in an occupied town.

Pierre Bourg is of Luxembourgish origin and is a teacher at the local school, the Athénée d'Ath. He keeps a war diary, in which he writes every day describing his difficulties and the dangers of the occupation.

The atrocities that these men witnessed and are now narrators of engage us.

The acts, committed in the name of the freedom that we enjoy today and owe to men like Cartuyvels or Bourg, did not lessen the questions that arose back then: heroes or bastards?

How can you serve and defend your country? What role do artists and intellectuals have in a war?

The exhibition will be followed by activities for school children and the wider public.
