Inside the Station - Exhibition on Princess Elisabeth Polar Station

Educational exhibit on the history and missions of the Belgian polar station. Discover an iconic symbol of polar research, in Brussels until 31/05!

The Princess Elisabeth polar station is a symbol of citizen involvement for more scientific research in Antarctica.

The themes presented are:

• Belgium in Antarctica: 'The A. de Gerlache expeditions' and 'The signing of the Antarctic Treaty' are the major chapters,
• 
  
• A "Zero Emission" Station: It produces its own energy thanks to solar panels and wind turbines. The electricity is distributed and controlled by an intelligent "smart grid" network.
• 
  
• The Polar Sciences: The ice cores are climate archives and the mouvement of the glaciers impacts on sea levels.

The polar sciences touch on themes that are close to us.

• The Fauna and Flora of the Antarctic: Life in Antarctica has had to adapt to its extreme environment. Discover other forms of life that are less-known or visible, like bacteria or lichens.

• The Journey to Antarctica: travelling to Antarctica is an adventure in itself. Experience the journey from Belgium to Utsteinen where you will visite the station.
• 
  
• Daily Life: It's full of daily challenges: safety, health care, extreme cold, waste management… and all this while doing the daily research work.

A crowd made up of the general public and numerous Belgian celebrities and figures was present.
