The planting of the Meyboom, or tree of joy, has its roots in many legends and is a typical and popular event. Every year in Brussels on 9 August!

The procession leaves from outside the Comic Strip Centre, rue des Sables, at around 2pm. The tree is part of this procession which includes the Giants of Brussels, the "Roue de la fortune" (wheel of fortune) and a cavalcade headed by Charles V.

They march to the Grand Place then return to the corner where the Rue des Sables meets the Rue des Marais.

The tree must be planted before 5pm!

The Meyboom festivities continue until late into the night.

    A historic event

This famous event has been organized since 1213 and celebrates Brussels' victory over the inhabitants of Louvain.

The Meyboom has been recognized as an Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.

The procession leaves from the rue du Marais at 2pm and heads towards the Grand-Place. The planting of the Meyboom takes place a little before 5pm, between the rue des Sables and the rue du Marais.
