Travelling exhibition. Admire the fruits of archaeological digs and studies from the last 20 years. In Mariemont from 20/04 to 29/09/13!
This exhibition is made up of Egyptian and Greco-Roman antiquities, both prestigious or never-before seen, from 11 museums and 3 private collections from Belgium, France and the Natherlands.
The exhibition stands out thanks to:
- The variety of ancient pieces,
- its additional exhibition of ancient maps and books,
- Egyptologists'' autographs and photographs of Alexandria and the Nile.
Discover an attractive scenography, which is made up of models, numerous visual aids and information boards.
Thanks to this audacious scenography, you are taken on a trip from the Nile to Alexandria!
it is an opportunity to familiarise yourself with the famous river, its history and to understand the ins and outs of water management from antiquity to the present day.
The history of the river is illustrated by several pieces: engravings, maps, archaeological objects, water tank models and numerous miniatures!
Among these objects, you can admire:
- Sculptures, Coptic textiles, ceramics, engravings...
- Ten coins in gold, silver and bronze,
- or even a superb earthenware New Year gourd that dates back to the 26th dynasty.
A whole section of the exhibition is dedicated to cartography, the accounts of travellers from the 16th to the 20th century and to youth literature.
You fill also find autographs from famous Egyptologists like Champollion, Mariette and Capart.
They will be alongside works by Thevenot, de Montfaucon, Stanley and Livingstone!
That's not forgetting maps from Mercator's Atlas or a first edition of Napoleon Bonaparte's famous Description of Egypt, or the collection of observations and research which were made in Egypt during the expedition of the French Army.
In 2013, Egypt takes centre stage at Mariemont. Don't miss it!
To accompany this exhibition, the museum has organised:
- Storytelling and guided tours for families on the first Sunday of each month,
- visit and workshops for families,
- conferences,
- free visits for teachers and organisers of group visits.
