Cirque Royal

Inaugurated in 1878, the Cirque Royal is among the most extravagant theatres in Brussels. It used to be the only permanent circus in Brussels. Conceived by Wilhelm Kuhnen, it consisted of a polygonal room with 20 sides and could hold up to 3 500 spectators on 15 rows.

Originally, the arena was equipped with a mechanism allowing for inundation and transforming it into a swimming pool. The Cirque Royal was subsequently used mainly for large shows, pantomimes and ballets, with up to 200 artists. There were also nautical shows and equestrian shows. Nowadays the Cirque Royal belongs to the City of Brussels. Part of the programme is managed by the cultural centre Le Botanique.
