In the year 1000, the chronicles already referred to a donjon designed to watch over the valley of the Eau Blanche river. This was the point where the Castle of Chimay was to be constructed.
The donjon, with its low-vaulted rooms, is the most interesting architectural part. The façade is scarred by the pullies that supported the drawbridge. You can still see the ancient vaults in the Guard Room as well as an ornamental tiling made of 45,000 slates.
The theatre, constructed in 1863, shows clear references to Louis XV's castle of Fontainebleau.
