Since the 12th century, the castle of Fagnolles, which was built on the initiative of the Counts of Hainaut, is located on a clod of earth surrounded by moats. It also has a donjon that was modernized in the 15th century by Gérard d'Enghien and Marie de Fagnolles. The old square fortress, which was in ruins and which was inspired by Syrian/Palestian designs, was restored in 1969 in a remarkable way, according to the "Charter of Venice". It was the old fortress of the sovereigns of Fagnolles, among whichs Prince Charles Joseph de Ligne, Count of Fagnolles.
