The Cistercian ruins of Aulne Abbey are found in Gozée, near the Belgian town of Thuin. Come and discover its history and traditional brewery.

The abbey is hidden in a steep valley on the right bank of the River Sambre called the "Valley of Peace". Today the remains are a haven of peace and a perfect place for a stroll.

Discover the history of the abbey and the life of the Cistercian monks thanks to educational signs right along the outdoor route. You can also enjoy the landscaped garden and its walks.

To end your day out, visit the adjoining Val de Sambre Brewery where you can taste real Belgian beers from the abbey.

You can also play mini-golf with family or friends near the abbey ruins.

A spot of history

According to legend, the abbey was founded in the 7th century by Saint Landelin, a reformed bandit who named it "Aulne Abbey", meaning "Alder Abbey", because its surroundings were rich in this species of tree.

The abbey was originally Benedictine but became Cistercian in the 12th century. It established its power through the years and was named "Aulne the Rich" until 17 May 1794 when it was burned down by French revolutionaries!
