The cave of the Man of Spy, which is one of the most important Palaeolithic sites in Europe, overhangs the valley of the Orneau River, a tributary of the Sambre River. Over the years, many excavations have been carried out in the cave, and in 1886, an exceptional amount of bones was discovered. A study of the bones led the international community to accept that humans different to modern man had once existed: Neanderthal man had been uncovered.
