Here’s one of the most beautiful RAVeL routes of the region. It also entails a veritable kaleidoscope of history, passing the ruins of fortresses to reach two famous abbeys.

Here at Bouvignes, our starting point, the Middle Ages can be seen and felt. You can even hear horseshoes clip-clopping over the cobbles of the narrow streets that lead down to the Porte Chevalier (Knight’s Gate), while the Forteresse de Crèvecoeur casts its shadow over the centre.

On the opposite bank of the River Meuse, near Houx, we can see the 15th-century ruins of the castle of Poilvache, one of a handful of castles considered to be a “Fortress of the State” (i.e. built by the state, rather than a local seigneur). A little after Anhée, we can swap our bikes for one of the draisines (railbikes), which run along the disused railway line in the Valley of the Molignée. Further on, back on the road, the ruins of Montaigle provide a magnificent picture of a medieval castle.

Our outward journey ends at the Gare de Maredsous, a disused station, now a delightful “Bistrot de Terroir”, where one can savour delicious regional dishes. The return journey is easy, as the RAVeL now is on a downward incline.

Good to know!

“Draisines-Railbike de la Molignée” provide railbikes to explore the Valley of the Molignée on a disused railway, between Warnant and Maredsous (a 6 - 14 km route).

In practice

Route surface
Asphalted RAVeL route, a dedicated cycle path. Along the River Molignée (after Anhée) the surface is excellent.

Bicycle type
Hybrid bike.

45 km in total, there and back (22 km to reach Maredsous from Bouvignes). No big difficulties to worry about. The optional extension leads to the two abbeys – the road begins just after the old railway station of Maredsous, now a “Bistrot de Terroir” (restaurant). It involves a climb, though.

Around 15 years old.

Cross the N96 at Bouvignes and pass under the railways, where you will find the RAVeL 2.

Follow the RAVeL signs. Along the River Meuse, a little after the pont-barrage (bridge over a dam), take the RAVeL L150A along the River Molignée.

By Place du Baillage in Bouvignes, by the Maison du Patrimoine Médiéval Mosan (The Mosan Medieval Heritage Centre).
