    This historic 1914-1918 trail takes you on a journey to where the Battle of the Sambre took place in Fosses-la-Ville, Aiseau-Presles and Sambreville in Belgium.


    The trail consists of a 33km car journey through Aiseau-Presles, Sambreville and Fosses-la-Ville. It evokes the events that occurred during the Great War enabling you to fully understand what the inhabitants had to endure at that time.

    The combats in the Battle of the Sambre, which ended in Fosses on 22 August 1914 on the Belle Motte plain, were the cause of so many losses, particularly from the French.

    The journey is marked by points of interest accompanied by informative signs depicting historical facts. On these signs, you will also find QR-codes providing you with extra information.


    Remarkable sites

    The Belle Motte Military Cemetery is the name given to the land where the violent combats ended on 22 August 1914. Close by is a panoramic table providing information about it. It is situated at the Cotelle monument, which was erected in memory of the Breton sub-lieutenant Georges Cotelle, a hero of this dreadful day.

    15km through Fosses-la-Ville can be done by car, village by village, piece by piece or by each place of interest, on foot or by bike.
