The existence of Lobbes dates back to Roman times, because of the presence of a construction dedicated to the god Mars on the actual site of the Collegiate Church Saint Ursmer. According to Folcuin (10th century), the Teuton term "lobach" signified "the stream in the shade" and was at the basis of the village's name.
